Legal Issues and Warflying guidelines Warflying, Wardriving, WarXing is legal ! (See legal research below) But some basic rules need to be followed to ensure that you don't end up on the receiving end of the gavel. HARDWARE/SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION NO NETWORK (TCP/IP) CONNECTION TO THE FOREIGN NETWORK All equipment must be configured to NOT ALLOW any logical connection with a foreign network. The interception steps must be limited to capturing the broadcasted header information without connecting to the network and obtaining a TCP/IP address Here is an example of what can be captured without getting a valid TCP/IP connection: Wireless signal protocol (802.11a/b/g) Access point broadcasted identification (MAC address, SSID) Encryption Enabled (yes/no or type of encryption) Signal strength at intercepted location RF (Radio Frequency) Channel and settings (Beacon rate, etc.) Supported Data Transfer speeds GPS coordinates supplied by the interception hardware (The fields captured in tools like NetStumbler) PAYLOAD CAPTURING You cannot intercept payload in order to obtain packet content No COOKIE CAPTURING No WEP CRACKING No PASSWORD INTERCEPTION Nothing past the headers SAFETY CONCERNS The pilot cannot be involved with any of the hardware/software required to perform the signal interception. His job is to fly the plane. Hardware such as antennas cannot be dangled out of the aircraft. If hardware is to be mounted on the aircraft, it must be done by a qualified aviation technician. A log entry must be present in the aircrafts log book. The quantity of hardware cannot overwhelm the aircraft, in the event of a forced landing, this hardware must be stowed in a secure place so that no risk of impact injury can occur. WARFLYERS.COM SITE POLICY We only post GPS coordinates for public access nodes (all default configuration nodes with no WEP). This means that if an owner did not rename their access points or called it something obviously public like FREE, OPEN, PUBLIC, etc. then we will post all the information captured by our tools. The rendered MAPS contain ALL intercepted nodes without node names. All comments/Complaints can be sent to: Version 1.0 Some interesting readings include a great paper published by the VIRGINIA JOURNAL OF LAW & TECHNOLOGY, written by Patrick S. Ryan from the faculty of Law, University of Colorado at Boulder. (Source webpage: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=585867) IMPORTANT NOTE:
